Requirement for Doctoral Degree
- The article that is going to be published to gain the degree must related to a doctoral dissertation.
- The candidate who plans to gain a doctoral degree must be the first author of a Doctoral Dissertation. However, if the advisor is the first author, the candidate can be the co-author.
- The first affiliation for a doctoral candidate who plans to gain a doctoral degree must be KAIST, and the advisor should be the corresponding author in principle, Still, it can be authorized if the advisor is a co-author.

Will give Automatic passes to graduating students who have satisfied the graduation requirements of the affiliated department of the candidate’s advisor.
- Should there be a change in the affiliation of the candidate’s advisor while the candidate is completing the degree, the candidate may choose the applied department requirement (former or current affiliated department)
- If the candidate’s advisor belongs to the School of Electrical Engineering, the student may choose the applied policy (former requirement policy or the current requirement policy)
- For journals not included in the above requirements, or should there be an outstanding research outcome related to the Robotics, the Doctoral Degree Committee of the Robotics Program will give a decision based on final evaluation.
Requirement for the Ph.D. Qualifying Examination Graduation
Method enforcement
it is taken every January and August. The application and related documents must be submitted before the 15th of the previous month of examination
Who may take an examination?
- Applicants who haven’t passed the Qualifying Examination.
- Applicants who enrolled in no less than two semesters and completed no less than three subjects. (the examination which is taken in the applicant’s second semester is eligible)
Note
- Suppose the applicant’s accumulative GPA is below 2.5/4.3 until the previous semester is not allowed to take examination. However, those who have less than 12 units until the previous semester don’t apply this limitation. (KAIST’s master degree earner’s master record is included)
- The candidate who is issued an academic warning consecutively is forced to be expelled from KAIST.
Doctoral Candidate must pass within 18 months since his/her entry.
